You Know

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-30 - 17:37:22

You know when everything is right.

When that final piece of the Jigsaw puzzle has been found and placed neatly into place to make the picture whole.

'Cause.

'Cause you know in your heart of hearts that no matter what your doing, you just don't want to be anywhere else with anybody else.

That's how you know.

Not This Time

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-29 - 22:00:26

So I didn't get the job.

I email Russell from the recruitment agency for feedback;

''yes - You gave a very good account of yourself, no negatives. The other person they saw had a lot of experience as an Ops Manager in a similar property.''

Ah well.

Another time, Highlander....

Interview Part Two

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-20 - 16:09:34

We say the funniest things at interviews.

When I say funny I think mean patronisingly pretentious.

But in a good way.

I'm sitting in the bar of the hotel chatting away to the HR Manager.

So far I think it's going pretty good.

In fact I know it is.

I'm relaxed, I'm chatting more than I am being interviewed.

''So tell me. How would you deal with a member of staff who is not performing..?'' she asks, taking a sip of her water.

''Well..'' I begin ''..I have always felt it is better to lead by influence rather than position...''.

Go me.

Interview

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-18 - 22:38:44

So I have an interview tomorrow.

It's a big hotel, one of the biggest in London and the role is a good one - Operations Manager.

They are looking for somebody with a strong rooms background, somebody to be the link between the GM and the HOD's, somebody make it happen on a daily basis.

The GM was the financial controller so I figure his Operations experience is limited, therefore he needs somebody strong in this area.

It's a big deal for me.

I have been with my present company for a total of eleven years.

Why am I going for it?

Well, there has been a change in politics at Canary Wharf and no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to reconcile myself too.

And I have tried.

It would be easy for me to just put and shut up, and get on with it.

But No.

Not this time.

PR Puh-lease!!!

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-17 - 15:49:06

An overheard conversation between PR girl Rita and Commercial Director DT;

''So Rita where are you based, where do you live?''

You have to imagine his voice, a deep Scottish bur, layered with over three decades of fags and booze.

''I live in Majorca. But I have flats in Manchester and London''

You can easily imagine the shrill of that tone.

''But I do try to be carbon neutral..''

Yep, that commute by jet is not going to pump anything into the air.

Uncle ?

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-17 - 11:31:36

''Are you a Dad yet?''

I text to my brother Andrew.

His first child was due this month.

I get no response.

None at all.

These family feuds.

They bum me out.

And he's not even involved.

Ashes To Ashes

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-11 - 10:29:49

So Sam Tyler decided to stay in 1973.

Cool.

I have really enjoyed this series, I have enjoyed the seventies again (hey I was JUST there the firs time round) and more than anything it's been great to watch a series where political corectness has been jettisoned out of the airlock.

When you compare todays drama's with things such as 'The Survivors' or 'Doomwatch' - man, something has been lost along the way.

Part of me is sad that there will be no more episodes of this great series and part of me is glad as it will never go the way that lots of great tv series have and become derivative of itself.

Gene Hunt will live on in the new Ashes to Ashes set in the 80's, this time with a female sidekick.

Doubleplus cool.

Lashings Of Marmalade

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-05 - 12:02:35

''It needs to be to the point and concise'' said C to our small group of Hotel Managers ''He has the attention span of....well a retarded gnat''

She was talking about our Chairman.

We have to meet with him and talk to him about how we perceive our roles within the company.

I mean puh-lease.

''I think mine may be a little too corporate marmalade'' I said, but I read it out anyway;

''The hotel manager should be the strategic thinker of the hotel; they should have the ability to view the business with a calm objectivity and to make any decision necessary to take their business forward. This should be balanced with an empathy for their co-workers, they should lead, not by position but by influence and they should first recruit the right people for the right jobs, then guide them in their career to fulfil their potential.''

She looked at me and took a drag on her cigarette.

'Erm. Yes.''

Bugger.

The Incredible Shrinking Man

by neilduffen @ 2007-04-04 - 00:14:24

''Lost 5kg so 11 pounds!'' said the text message from G.

''WoW'' I replied.

That's how much weight he had lost in his first week of dieting.

WOW indeed.

I was proud of him.

We are both big guys, and he has been so disciplined in the last week or so with is diet, he has stuck to his diet with a steely determination and I admire him for it.

He has done so well.

I love him, I am proud of him and I will support him as much as I am able.
